The same model can support eSIM in one country and not in another
Makers ship different hardware under one model name depending on the market. The best-known cases: iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are built without eSIM entirely, and so are the US versions of the Galaxy S20, Note20 Ultra and S21. Handsets sold on a carrier contract are built to that carrier’s specification too.
So the thing that settles it is your own handset: dial *#06# and look for an EID. Full instructions here.
iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are built without eSIM — including the XR, XS and XS Max. A model on this list bought in those markets will not work.
The US versions of the S20, S20 FE, Note20 Ultra and S21 have no eSIM, unlike the same models sold elsewhere. Carrier-branded units vary too.
Pixel 2 and 3 models bought in Australia, Japan, Taiwan or on a carrier contract often have no eSIM.
These makers have eSIM models, but the line-up varies enough between markets that listing individual models would mislead more than it helps:

Support on its own is not enough — the phone also has to be free of a carrier lock. A locked handset will accept the eSIM, install it, and then refuse to register, which looks to the customer like a plan that does not work rather than a phone that will not let it.
The list lags the market — new models appear weekly, and a phone missing from here is not a phone without eSIM. Ask us and we will check it with you before you buy.
